Is your cell phone privacy safe at protests? Probably not.

This post is dedicated for those people who like to protest or be in large groups at other special events. I found an article on privacysos.org that talks about "IMSI catchers" that tricks your phone into thinking it's connected to a mobile tower. Even though the article was published in 2012, it's hard telling how much this IMSI product has evolved since then. In some ways it doesn't surprise me since I grew up knowing people could buy scanners and listen to telephone conversations as long as the people around them have a cordless phone.

I don't know if the ability to listen in on cordless phone conversations are still a possibility, but I think that was the whole reason of going to cell phones, so that it keeps peoples noses out of your business. How do you feel about this IMSI product being used to eavesdrop on your conversations? If IMSI-like products would to ever get cheaper, would you feel comfortable knowing your next door neighbor could be listening to your conversations? You have to admit, something similar is eventually bound to be sold to the public.
